About This Workshop
In this workshop, the participant will experience the entire process of intaglio printing with drypoint technique using zinc or plexiglass plate. They will get to know the intaglio printing with sample images and will be introduced to the technique, and will learn briefly about the history of printmaking.
They will prepare the image according to its applicability to the drypoint intaglio (this can be a reference photo or a visual they have drawn), and will learn to apply this image to the surface of the plate with hard-pointed needle of sharp metal or diamond point. In order to create a strong effect as a result of the intaglio print, the basic plan of texture and depth will be created by emphasizing the balance of light/dark, light/shadow. Then, they will learn to ink the plate and print it with the press on quality papers suitable for intaglio printing.
What the Atelier Will Provide to Participants
Atelier Güve will provide all the materials needed for the drypoint technique.
These are;
- Drawing tools to prepare the image according to the drypoint technique,
- Hand tools and spare tips and hard-pointed needles to incise the image on the metal or plexiglass surface,
- Zinc plate 0,80 mm thick and approximately A5 size. Or Plexiglass plate 4 mm thick and approximately A5 size,
- High quality oil-based inks and solvents,
- Quality papers suitable for intaglio printing.
What We Recommend You Bring
We recommend that you bring your design sketches or the image you want to work with this technique. However, if you have trouble finding inspiration, do not worry because there will be plenty of suitable images and ideas in our atelier for you to reference.
You can also bring a notebook to take notes during the workshop.
Safety
We will provide participants with aprons and nitrile gloves to prevent paint, ink, etc. from getting on their clothes and hands, otherwise the oil-based inks we will use may remain on their clothes permanently.
**In drypoint technique, we use sharp and cutting scrapers to scrape the surface where the image will be transferred. Participants are expected to follow instructions on how to hold and use these hand tools and be careful when using all workshop tools and equipment.
